Send a text to the nearest Earth-like planet outside our Solar System…

Sounds like the latest crazy project originated from SETI? Close but not quite.

www.hellofromearth.net is a pretty cool experiment run by Cosmos Magazine during Science Week in Australia. The site is collecting messages that will be transmitted to Gliese 581d, a planet outside our Solar System which may support life. The messages will be transmitted to space from the Deep Space Communication Complex in Tidbinbilla.

The Science Week crew explains what this project is all about here on www.10daysofscience.com: astronomers believe Gliese 581 is a candidate for life.

Some facts and figures:
- Gliese 581 is eight times the size of Earth, 20 light years away.
- The messages leaving Earth will arrive in year 2029.
- more than 20,000 messages have been collected as of 22/8/09, representing 2.5Mb of data.
